1964-65 Gibson SG Custom

$23,525.00

Pleased to offer this one owner 1964 Gibson SG Custom bought right here in Orlando, Florida in 1965. These early SG Customs were made in few numbers and the ones in excellent condition have become rare and hard to find. This is a great original example of the early SG Customs of the 1960s. Pots date to 14th week of 1965 but serial number points to 1964; a late β€˜64 build waiting on pots is my bet.

Everything is original on this one owner SG. About 15 years ago, the neck pocket was loosening so it was taken to a Luthier who inserted glue into the neck pocket and clamped the neck. I personally spoke with the Luthier, located in Georgia, and he told me that the neck pocket glue must have dried up or the factory may have applied too little glue. He assured me the neck was never off the guitar, there was no break or repair other than merely adding glue and clamping to tighten the neck as intended.

The Luthier did not match the glue color around the neck joint but he came close. After consulting a Luthier and refin painter I work with who said to match it would require spraying the entire neck; to me that was unacceptable to its vintage originality and not worth it.

The original finish is in excellent condition, some nice patina on the Maestro tailpiece. Original knobs, frets, pots and patent number pickups. Apparently the Gibson factory never hooked the middle pickup to the switch; therefore, it’s never been played! We are leaving as-is to preserve originality.

This guitar is one of those special ones that most of us want somewhere in our collections. The patent number pre-t top pickups sound impressive; powerful yet with headroom.
